Applications: Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is an extremely hazardous, toxic compound. It is a colorless, flammable gas that can be identified in relatively low concentrations, by a characteristic rotten egg odor. The gas occurs naturally in coal pits, sulfur springs, gas wells, and as a product of decaying sulfur-containing organic matter, particularly under low oxygen conditions. It is therefore commonly encountered in places such as sewers, sewage treatment plants (H2S is often called sewer gas), manure stockpiles, mines, hot springs, and the holds of fishing ships. Industrial sources of hydrogen sulfide include petroleum and natural gas extraction and refining, pulp and paper manufacturing, rayon textile production, leather tanning, chemical manufacturing and waste disposal.
Measure the concentration of Hydrogen Sulfide gas coming out of a gas pipe, sewer system, industrial processing facility, or near a deep well. The Hydrogen Sulfide Inspector is robust and accurate enough to be used as a professional Hydrogen Sulfide detector. Professional applications include use in a mine, combustion analysis, refineries and waste treatment centers. Detailed application information can be found here.

reviewing information available from government agencies:

New York State Department of Health
OSHA

Lethal Gas Levels

1 0.00047 ppm The odor threshold, the point at which 50% of a human panel can detect the presence of the compound
2 10–20 ppm The borderline concentration for eye irritation
3 20 ppm The acceptable ceiling concentration established by OSHA
4 50 ppm The acceptable maximum peak above the ceiling concentration for an 8 hour shift, with a maximum duration of 10 minutes
5 50–100 ppm Leads to eye damage
6 100–150 ppm The olfactory nerve is paralyzed after a few inhalations, and the sense of smell disappears, often together with awareness of danger
7 320–530 ppm Leads to pulmonary edema with the possibility of death

8 530–1000 ppm Causes strong stimulation of the central nervous system and rapid breathing, leading to loss of breathing
9 800 ppm Is the lethal concentration for 50% of humans for 5 minutes exposure
10 >1000 ppm Causes immediate collapse with loss of breathing, even after inhalation of a single breath
11 - OSHA has established a permissible exposure limit (PEL)(8 hour time-weighted average(TWA)) of 10 ppm
